The Mustang Suite

2008

Series of 5 chromogenic prints

Dimensions: 48 x 60 inches

In the series The Mustang Suite, Dana Claxton depicts a NDN family, each with their own mustang. Collapsing boundaries between the traditional and the contemporary, this family demonstrates a relationship to the horse and freedom. Through these images, the artist relates her own Lakota Sioux heritage, and exposes indigenous culture mobility over time.

The Mustang Suite, installation view, Steeling the Gaze: Portraits by Aboriginal Artists, presented at the National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa from Oct. 31 2008 to March 22, 2009. Photo: NGC, Ottawa.
